Summary: A surprisingly useful reference, but British-biased
Comment: This book at first glance looks like so many many often deep discounted color books of ships and planes that present a very superficial look at their subject matter. And, to some extent, that is true in this book. However, this book rises above because of its comprehensiveness. Every aircraft carrier or aviation ship that you've ever heard of - and quite a few that you've not, I guarantee, are covered in at least some detail. The large, colorful format may fool you also into thinking that the text is superfluous. Indeed, it's actually quite good given the constraints of the format, though it does tend to harp on issues of ship design to the exclusion of other characteristics.
The book is roughly divided into two halves - in the first there is a general history of aircraft carriers, their development, and their operations. In the second, more interesting half, there is a comprehensive listing of aircraft carriers by country and class. Each class gets between a half page and two facing pages. It's a good book to pick up from time to time to learn something new, and then to scurry off to wikipedia or elsewhere if you find some nugget of detail that catches your interest.
Given what this book is, the only criticism that I have is that it is horribly British biased. Apparently, nothing has ever been done on an aircraft carrier that the British didn't think of or do first, even if this is simply asserted with the vaguest of supporting evidence. We learn that the British were responsible for carrier design elements for virtually every aircraft carrrier class ever made, this, despite having a rather mediocre record with carriers themselves. I'm not saying that the items mentioned are false per se - I'm just suggesting that there was a heck of a lot of cross-pollination of ideas in carrier design, and it is a testament to the British biases of the authors that only the British ones are emphasized and re-emphasized ad nauseum.
